Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) Grant

Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) is a grant-funded program that helps students who are placed on University Support Status. University Support Status (USS) happens when a student's CSU GPA falls below a 2.0. The SIP Grant also works with students who are not making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Students will meet with an Academic Success Advisor and an Academic Success Coach housed in CSU ADVISE. The purpose of this program is to help students create an Academic Success Plan and arm themselves with strategies to help them meet their academic goals.

University Support Advising

A University Support Advisor will meet the student one-on-one or virtually to complete an twice a semester with their Academic Success Advisor. These meetings are informal and allows the academic success advisor to get to know you and your specific situation, so that they can help you to develop strategies to achieve academic success. Meetings are required and will take place at the beginning and middle of the semester. We will go over GPA calculation, and explain what services we offer, so that the student can have a successful academic career. Your Academic Success Advisors are Michelle Dorrill (last names A-J) and Julie Lowry (last names K-Z).

University Support Coaching

Our University Support Coaches (Peer Mentors) are a great group of students who attend Columbus State University and do very well in the classroom. They have been trained on a variety of learning techniques, are very knowledgeable, and enjoy working with other students. Our University Support Coaches will meet either in-person or virtually with students pertaining to the various areas the student might need help in, such as Time Management, Syllabus Review, Test-Taking/Study Strategies, Note Taking Techniques, and more.

University Support Tutoring

Our University Support Tutors are students who excel academically in the classroom and are able to communicate content effectively to fellow students. University Support Tutors provide in-person and remote tutoring in English, Math, Science, and History courses.

Free Financial Literacy Workshop

A virtual workshop delivered via CougarView that teaches students about Budgeting, Navigating Student Loans, Establishing Credit, and Investing.

Free Learning Disability Testing

SIP has partnered with the CSU Counseling Center to provide students with an assessment to determine whether or not they have a learning disability. Students are referred to complete the assessment through University Support Advisors.

Free Strong Interest Inventory

The Counseling Center partners with the SIP Grant to give the Strong Interest Inventory Assessment, which provides robust insight into a person's interests, to help students to consider potential careers, their educational paths, and the world of work. The test is normally $25, but is offered free of charge to qualifying students. Please contact your Academic Success Advisor for more information on the Strong Interest Inventory and referrals.
